Responds to and provides services related to medical, trauma, rescue and fire related emergencies. Also performs additional emergency services work as required. Much of the work is performed under emergent conditions, position is considered essential personnel.

Essential Functions
Responds to emergency medical calls and provides basic and advanced medical services.
Responds to assist local fire departments on fires, emergency rescues, hazardous materials incidents, public service calls or other incidents, which require the mitigation of circumstances that may threaten life and/or property.
Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency medical and fire equipment, tools and supplies; inspects and performs general maintenance tasks on ambulances and equipment for compliance with safety and sanitary policies.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Monitors inventory levels of department supplies; checks expiration of drugs/supplies; initiates order for new and replacement materials through their shift supervisor.
Utilizing the established chain of command, communicates with supervisors, employees, and all other appropriate parties to coordinate work activities, review status of work, review status of patients, exchange information or resolve problems.

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

Knowledge & compliance of County, State & Federal laws, regulations and protocols for providing emergency medical services.
Knowledge & compliance of County, State & Federal laws, regulations and protocols for providing firefighting services.
Ability to operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and emergency medical/fire suppression equipment, tools and supplies.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to perform duties under pressure and in an emergent environment.
Work mandatory overtime as needed and required by minimum staffing requirements.
Ability to coordinate and maintain an effective relationship with other agencies.
Ability to complete and maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational records.
Ability to utilize basic computer programs and reporting software as required by the department.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Education & experience equivalent to a (1) high school diploma; (2) completion of EMT Intermediate/Paramedic training and (3) two years previous experience and/or training in EMS field.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain the following:

? Virginia Driver`s License

? Emergency Medical Technician (Intermediate/Paramedic) certification

? Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

? Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification

? Emergency Vehicles Operator Course (EVOC) certification

? Hazardous Materials Operations certification

? CPR certification

Requirements specified in the NIMS (National Incident Management System)
compliance manual.

Must successfully complete the following:

? Bloodborne Pathogen training

? Personal Protective Equipment training

? Respirator Protection training

? Any Occupational training as designated by the Director or in compliance with applicable laws.
Any applicant not possessing current Virginia certifications as a Firefighter II or Hazardous Materials Operations must be willing to obtain these certifications within 2 years of employment.

Working Conditions
Performs duties during emergency, or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke; requires frequent lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 125 pounds; requires walking, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling over terrain and buildings. Will be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature, and noise extremes, bright/dim light, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic.
